JSTORProvides access to archived scholarly journals, JSTOR is commonly referred to as "Journal STORage." It contains disciplines that are divided into several modules. UD subscribes to only three of many modules: Arts and Humanities I, Arts and Humanities II, and Language and Literature. Journals may be browsed or searched, and the full text is for most titles begin with volume 1. Although some issues begin in the 1800s, all have an embargo, which may be as far back as 8 years. That is, none are published in the current years; and it is a “moving wall” so the last date changes each year. Some of the titles are continued to the present in Project Muse. (ITHAKA – Direct)

CIAO: Columbia International Affairs Online
Allows access to research from the world’s leading international relations centers. Includes full text of working papers from 92 contributing institutions, as well as conference proceedings, papers and books, and abstracts from the leading journals of international affairs. Includes monthly statistics on American and international economics and on regional, political, and country maps. A customized web search is available which permits the option of limiting searches to carefully reviewed websites of international organization, governnmental bodies, research institutions and news organizations.

HighWire Press is one of the two largest archives of free full text science on Earth. As of 6/5/01, this database contained the online version of 259,048 free full text articles and 996,814 total articles.

This online database contains more than 18,000 entries for plays and may be searched by author and/or title. Created by Portland State University librarians, the source cites the PSU Library of Congress call numbers of sources for the texts of plays. Check Southwestern’s Voyager Catalog to see if we have the item. For items we do not own, you may request the material through Interlibrary Loan.

JSTOR: Journal Storage Collection Online
An electronic archive of scholarly journals from the humanities, social sciences, and the natural sciences. Each of the 624 titles is an essential or primary one for its field. The JSTOR database is unique because the complete backfiles of core scholarly journals (excluding the most recent five years) have been digitized, starting with the first issues, many of which date back to the 1800s. Users can browse the complete table of contents for every volume and issue, or search for words or phrases in the full text of the article, author and abstracts. JSTOR displays articles in page-image format.

JSTOR: Plant Science
This is a comprehensive online research tool for aggregating and exploring the world?s botanical resources, bringing together content, tools, and people interested in plant science. It provides access to plant type specimens, taxonomic structures, scientific literature, and related materials.



LANIC: Latin American Network Information Center
This database facilitates access to Internet-based information to, from, or on Latin America. Many of these resources are designed to facilitate research and academic endeavors. LANIC’s editorially reviewed directories contain over 10,000 unique URLs, one of the largest guides for Latin American content on the Internet.

LearningExpress Library

Legal Collection offers full text for nearly 250 of the world’s best law journals. This database provides information centered on the discipline of law and legal topics such as criminal justice, international law, federal law, organized crime, medical, labor & human resource law, ethics, the environment and much more. Full text journals contained in this database include: American Journal of Criminal Law, California Law Review, and many more. In addition to full text, indexing and abstracts are provided for all journals in the collection. The majority of full text titles are available in native (searchable) PDF, or scanned-in-color. Full text information in this database dates as far back as 1965.

LexisNexis Academic
LexisNexis Academic provides full text and citation access to information in the reference, business, medical, and legal disciplines. The vast majority of the titles on LexisNexis Academic are available in full text. The service covers newspapers, magazines, wire services, federal and state court opinions, federal and state statutes, federal regulations, and SEC filings such as 10-K’s, 10-Q’s, and their exhibits. News information is updated daily and wire services several times daily. This database indexes more than 560 core journals, nearly 50 priority journals, and nearly 125 selective journals; plus books, research reports and proceedings. Subject coverage includes librarianship, classification, cataloging, bibliometrics, online information retrieval, information management and more. Coverage in the database extends back as far as the mid-1960s.

Literary Reference Center

Literary Reference Center contains full text for more than 35,000 plot summaries, synopses and work overviews, nearly 100,000 articles/essays of literary criticisms, more than 253,000 author biographies (including more than 22,000 in-depth bios), more than 460 literary journals, more than 693,000 book reviews, nearly 78,000 classic and contemporary poems, more than 19,600 classic and contemporary short stories, more than 6,500 author interviews, more than 8,200 classic texts and much more.

Literature Resource Center
This literature reference center contains biographical, bibliographical, and critical content. Includes information on literary figures from all time periods writing in such genres as fiction, nonfiction, poetry, drama, history, journalism, and more. Databases included are: Encyclopedia of Literature and Gale Literary Index. Includes some full text journals.


MAS Ultra - School Edition
Designed specially for high school libraries, this database contains full text for popular, high school magazines. The database also provides reference books, biographies, and primary source documents, as well as an image collection of photos, maps and flags.

MasterFILE Premier
Designed for public libraries, this multidisciplinary database provides full text content for general reference publications, with full text article information dating as far back as 1975. This database is updated daily.

MathSciNet is a comprehensive database covering the world’s mathematical literature since 1940. Access to mathematical reviews and mathematical publications. Provides web access to the bibliographic data and reviews of mathematical research literature contained in the Mathematical Reviews Database.

A Spanish language collection of medical research and investigative journals published by renowned Latin American medical publishers. This unique database provides access to full text for nearly 100 peer-reviewed medical journals.

MEDLINE (National Library of Medicine)
Access to information from all journals indexed in the National Library of Medicine’s MEDLINE file. Gain access to information from such fields as medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, the health care system and preclinical sciences. Links to full text of over 350 full text journals. Included are abstracts and indexing for over 3,800 current biomedical journals published in the U.S. and 70 foreign countries, and citations found in Index Medicus, the International Nursing Index and the Index to Dental Literature. Additionally, table of contents information for 2,400 titles (provided by the British Document Supply Centre) and a Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) index with tree numbers, tree hierarchy is also included. PubMed also searches MEDLINE and has links to molecular biology databases of DNA/protein sequences and 3-D structure data.

Middle Search Plus(for middle school students)
Provides full text for popular, middle school magazines. Full text is also available for thousands of biographies and historical essays. Middle Search Plus contains primary source documents, as well as an image collection of photos, maps and flags.

Military & Government Collection
Designed to provide current news about all branches of the military. Full text from over 320 military and general interest publications is included, and indexing and abstracts for over 360 magazines. Some titles included are Military Review, Parameters, Army Times, and Defense. This database is updated weekly on EBSCOhost.

MLA Directory of Periodicals
Produced by the Modern Language Association, this research directory lists over 7,000 journals indexed in the MLA International Bibliography. The directory includes periodicals relating to the areas of literature, language and linguistics, literary theory and criticism, dramatic arts, and folklore. Entries for each title include editorial contact information, information about submission for publication, language, advertising rates, publication frequency and circulation subscription prices.

MLA International Bibliography
Indexes the world’s research literature in language, linguistics, and literature. Access to scholarly research in over 3,000 journals and series, monographs, working papers, proceedings, bibliographies, and other formats. 1963-present.


Natural & Alternative Treatments
This database contains almost two hundred articles on medical conditions, presenting in an evidence-based manner the alternative medicine therapies proposed for use in their treatment. It also contains detailed, evidence-based information on herbs and supplements, functional foods, and other alternative therapies such as acupuncture and homeopathy. The evidence-based content has been developed and reviewed by a team of physicians and pharmacologists with the goal of providing consumers with reliable information.

Newspaper Source
Provides selected full text for nearly 30 national (U.S.) and international newspapers. The database also contains full text television & radio news transcripts, and selected full text for more than 200 regional (U.S.) newspapers. This database is updated daily via EBSCOhost.

NLM Gateway
The NLM Gateway allows users to search in multiple retrieval systems at the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM). The current Gateway searches MEDLINE/PubMed, OLDMEDLINE, LOCATORplus, MEDLINEplus, ClinicalTrials.gov, DIRLINE, Meeting Abstracts, and HSRProj. See the Overview for details. Oxford Art Online

The database contains articles from the Grove Dictionary of Art  on every aspect of the visual arts - painting, sculpture, graphic arts, architecture, decorative arts and photography - from prehistory to the present day. Also contains biographies, bibliographies, and thousands of links to color images and home pages from the world’s leading museums, picture libraries, and galleries around the world. 

Oxford English Dictionary Online
This database contains the entire text of the 22-volume Oxford English Dictionary, second edition, located in Reference at call number 423 Ox2. The electronic text contains the meaning, history, and pronunciation of words, both present and past.

Oxford Music Online

Includes The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, The New Grove Dictionary of Opera, and The New Grove Dictionary of Jazz.  The database contains articles on music history, music theory and practice, musical terminology, instruments and their history, and the music of various locations ranging from continents to units as small as a city.

Perseus Project
An evolving digital library of full text resources for the study of the ancient world and beyond. Includes books, papers, images, and maps from the archaic and classic Greek world, ancient Rome, and the Renaissance. Also included are Latin texts and tools, ancient science materials, Greek lexicography, art and archeology texts, and works of Christopher Marlowe and Shakespeare.

Philosopher’s Index
The Philosopher’s Index provides indexing and abstracts from books and journals of philosophy and related fields, beginning in 1940. It covers the areas of ethics, aesthetics, social philosophy, political philosophy, epistemology, and metaphysics logic as well as material on the philosophy of law, religion, science, history, education, and language.

Play Index

The Play Index searches over 30,000 plays written from Antiquity to the present and published from 1949 to the present in the convenient electronic form that patrons prefer. The database also features over 340 full-text reference books and monographs, and over 36,000 full-text conference papers, including those of the International Political Science Association.

Popline (NLM)
Produced by the Population Information Program, John Hopkins University, Popline is one of the largest bibliographic databases on reproductive health and free of charge on the web. The database provides citations with abstracts of the worldwide literature in the fields of population studies, population law and policy, demography, family planning, sexual and reproductive health and related health issues. On some occasion you may be given a direct link to some of the publications.

Population Index
Population Index is the primary reference tool to the world’s population literature. It presents an annotated bibliography of recently published books, journal articles, working papers, and other materials on population topics. This website provides a searchable and browsable database containing 46,035 abstracts of demographic literature published in Population Index in the period 1986-2000.

Primary Search (for elementary students)
Provides full text for popular magazines for elementary school research. All articles are assigned a reading level indicator (Lexiles), and full text content dates back as far as 1990.

PRISMA (Publicaciones y Revistas Sociales y Humanisticas)
PRISMA is a comprehensive reference resource providing full-text scholarly journals in the social sciences and humanities for the interdisciplinary academic study of Hispanic and Latin America, and the Caribbean Basin. Offering key titles indexed in the Hispanic American Periodicals Index (HAPI), PRISMA features Spanish, Portuguese and English language content.

Index of worldwide conference proceedings. Contains in each record a list of the papers presented at each conference. Covers 1993 to the present; updated two times per week.

Professional Development Collection
Designed for professional educators, this database provides a highly specialized collection of nearly 550 high quality education journals, including more than 350 peer-reviewed titles. This database also contains more than 200 educational reports.Professional Development Collection is the most comprehensive collection of full text education journals in the world.

PROLA: Physical Review OnLine Archive
Indexes and provides full text to all American Physical Society journal material published from 1893 to present; includes Physical Review sections A-E, Physical Review Letters, Reviews of Modern Physics, and other information.

Project MUSE
Provides full image journal articles in the humanities and social sciences, in particular the areas of literature and criticism, history, the visual and performing arts, cultural studies, education, political science, gender studies, and many others.

PsycARTICLES is a definitive source of searchable full text articles on current issues in psychology. The database contains more than 35,000 searchable full text articles from 41 journals published by the American Psychological Association and 8 from allied organizations. It contains all journal articles, letters to the editor and errata from each of the 49 journals. Coverage spans from 1988 to the present.

International coverage of the professional and academic literature in psychology, medicine, psychiatry, nursing, sociology, education, pharmacology, physiology, linguistics, and other areas. Includes references and abstracts to over 1,300 journals and dissertations. Popular literature is excluded.

Psychology and Behavioral Sciences Collection
This database provides nearly 575 full text publications, including nearly 550 peer-reviewed titles. Psychology & Behavioral Sciences Collection covers topics such as emotional and behavioral characteristics, psychiatry & psychology, mental processes, anthropology, and observational and experimental methods. Nearly every full text title included in this database is indexed in PsycINFO. This database is updated daily via EBSCOhost.

PubMed is part of the Entrez Retrieval System operated by NLM’s National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI). It searches more than 16 million citations to biomedical literature from the 1950s onward. The citations are from MedLine and additional life science sources. PubMed also includes links to sites providing full-text articles and related resources. Other PubMed services include Journal Browser, MeSH, Citation Matcher, Clinical Queries (for physicians), and Clinical Trials.

PubMed Central
PMC is a free digital archive of biomedical and life sciences journal literature. Participating journals deposit their content with PMC, but copyright is retained by the journal or authors (as appropriate). Articles can be searched by keyword, author, or journal title. This is an online research management, writing and collaboration tool designed to help researchers easily gather, manage, store and share all types of information, as well as generate citations and bibliographies. You must initially create an account while on campus, but you can then log into this resource from anywhere.

Regional Business News
This database provides comprehensive full text coverage for regional business publications. Regional Business News incorporates coverage of 75 business journals, newspapers and newswires from all metropolitan and rural areas within the United States. This database is updated on a daily basis.

Religion and Philosophy Collection
This database provides extensive coverage of such topics as world religions, major denominations, biblical studies, religious history, epistemology, political philosophy, philosophy of language, moral philosophy and the history of philosophy. Religion & Philosophy Collection offers more than 300 full text journals, including more than 250 peer-reviewed titles, making it an essential tool for researchers and students of theology and philosophical studies. This database is updated daily via EBSCOhost.

RILM Abstracts of Music Literature
RILM Abstracts of Music Literature contains records with abstracts from over 500 scholarly journals. Articles, books, bibliographies, catalogues, conference proceedings, discographies, dissertations, ethnographic recordings, Festschriften, films, iconographies, and videos are all covered by RILM. Concert reviews, recording notes, and pedagogical manuals are also indexed if they are of scholarly interest. .


SAO/NASA Astrophysics Data System
Also known as ADS, this is a Digital Library portal for researchers in Astronomy and Physics, operated by the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO) under a NASA grant. The ADS maintains three bibliographic databases containing more than 9.1 million records: Astronomy and Astrophysics, Physics, and arXiv e-prints. The main body of data in the ADS consists of bibliographic records, which are searchable through highly customizable query forms, and full-text scans of much of the astronomical literature which can be browsed or searched via our full-text search interface. Integrated in its databases, the ADS provides access and pointers to a wealth of external resources, including electronic articles, data catalogs and archives. It currently has links to over 9.2 million records.

Salem Health
Salem Health provides complete access to the five-volume print version of Magill’s Medical Guide (available in the A. Frank Smith Library Center—Call Number Reference 610.3M272 2008). It is a comprehensive reference to major diseases and disorders of the human body, the basics of human anatomy and physiology, specializations in medical practice, and common surgical and nonsurgical procedures. 

Salem History
Salem History is an online history database that includes the complete contents of printed reference sets in the A. Frank Smith Library. These include: Milestone Documents, The Decades, and Great Lives from History series.

Salem Literature
Salem Literature is an online literary database that includes the complete content of the printed reference sets Critical Insights, Magill’s Literary Annual 2012, and Masterplots, Fourth Edition.

Science & Technology Collection
The Science & Technology Collection contains over 800 leading full text journals covering relevant aspects of the scientific and technical community. Topics include aeronautics, astrophysics, chemistry, computer technology, geology, aviation, physics, archaeology, and materials science. In addition to the full text, this database offers indexing and abstracts for more than 1,700 publications.

An online journal service with access to 200 or more peer-reviewed scientific and social sciences journals, all published by Academic Press. Beginning with the 1996 issues, users can browse the complete table of contents for every volume and issue, or search these seven specific fields: subject, abstract, affiliation, author, date, keywords and article title.ScienceDirect reproduces the full journal articles on screen as they appear in the printed paper version. Requires Adobe Acrobat software.

SciFinder is a research tool that allows you to explore the CAS abstract databases containing literature from many scientific disciplines including biomedical sciences, chemistry, engineering, materials science, agricultural science, and others. You must set up an account while on campus to use this database.

Scribner Writers
Gain access to 1,600 original and detailed bio-critical essays on the lives and works of important authors from around the world. Many authors in the Scribner Writers Series are seen from multiple perspectives through two, three or sometimes four essays. Students can go directly to an entry on a specific author, combine search criteria for a much more complex search, or explore thematic and chronological topics to make connections among writers.

Serials Directory
Provides access to the most up-to-date and accurate bibliographic information as well as current pricing structures for popular serials. This database contains nearly 184,000 U.S. and international titles, including newspapers, historical data for an additional 20,000 titles and data from nearly 83,500 publishers worldwide.
